Programming Fundamentals
The ideas every programming language shares: variables, types, control flow, functions and how code becomes a running program.
Every language looks different on the surface, but they are all built from the same handful of ideas. Learn them once and you can pick up any new language quickly:
- Data — values, variables and types.
- Decisions —
if/elseandswitch. - Repetition — loops.
- Abstraction — functions that package logic behind a name.
- Tooling — compilers, interpreters, debuggers and version control.
Sub-topics (9)
What Is Programming
Programming means describing a solution so precisely that a machine can carry it out.
Algorithms and Flowcharts
An algorithm is a finite, unambiguous sequence of steps; a flowchart draws those steps as shapes and arrows.
Variables and Data Types
A variable is a named place to store a value; its data type decides what values it can hold and what operations make sense.
Operators and Expressions
Operators combine values into expressions: arithmetic, comparison, logical and assignment.
Control Flow
Control flow decides which statements run and how many times, using conditions and loops.
Functions
A function packages reusable logic behind a name, with inputs (parameters) and an output (return value).
Compilers and Interpreters
Compilers translate a whole program to machine code before it runs; interpreters execute it statement by statement.
Debugging Basics
Debugging is the systematic process of finding why a program behaves differently from what you expect.
Version Control with Git
Git records every change to your project so you can go back in time, work on features safely and collaborate.
