Rooftop solar: panels, inverters, on-grid vs off-grid, sizing and net metering.

A PV module's output depends on irradiance and temperature (power falls roughly 0.3–0.5 % per °C above 25 °C). Datasheet values are at STC: 1000 W/m², 25 °C cell temperature.

  • On-grid — feeds the utility grid through a grid-tied inverter; net metering credits exported units. No batteries; shuts down during a grid outage (anti-islanding).
  • Off-grid — batteries + charge controller (PWM or MPPT) + inverter.
  • Hybrid — grid-tied with battery backup.

Rough sizing in much of India: 1 kWp produces about 4 kWh per day on average (around 1300–1600 kWh per year depending on location, tilt and shading). Government schemes such as PM Surya Ghar subsidise residential rooftop systems.
