Rectifier Diodes

Diodes like the 1N4007 convert AC into DC in power supplies.

Rectifier diodes handle significant current and reverse voltage at mains frequency. The 1N400x family is rated 1 A; the 1N4007 withstands 1000 V reverse.

For high-frequency switching (SMPS), use fast/ultrafast recovery diodes (short trrt_{rr}) or Schottky diodes — a slow diode keeps conducting briefly when reversed, wasting power and creating noise.

Circuits that use them: half-wave, full-wave centre-tap and bridge rectifiers (see Power Supplies → Rectifiers).
