DC Machines

Commutator machines that run as DC motors or generators — construction, EMF and torque equations.

A DC machine has a field (stator poles or permanent magnets) and an armature (rotor) connected through a commutator and brushes, which reverse the coil current every half turn so torque stays in one direction.

E=PΦNZ60AT=PΦZIa2πAE = \frac{P\Phi N Z}{60 A} \qquad T = \frac{P\Phi Z I_a}{2\pi A}

(PP poles, ZZ conductors, AA parallel paths, NN in rpm.) In short, E=kΦωE = k\Phi\omega and T=kΦIaT = k\Phi I_a.

Field connections: separately excited, shunt, series and compound.

DC Motor Speed Control

Speed depends on armature voltage and field flux: N ∝ (V − IaRa)/Φ.
