Electric Shock and First Aid
How electric current harms the body and what to do if someone receives a shock.
Beginner
Effects of AC current through the body (approximate, 50 Hz, hand to feet):
| Current | Effect |
|---|---|
| 1 mA | perception |
| 5–10 mA | painful; let-go threshold for many people |
| 10–30 mA | muscle contraction — may be unable to let go |
| 50–100 mA | ventricular fibrillation possible |
| > 1 A | severe burns, cardiac arrest |
If someone is being shocked: don't touch them. Switch off the supply (MCB/main switch) or push them away with a dry non-conductive object such as wood. Call emergency services (112 in India). If they are not breathing normally, start CPR and use an AED if available. Treat burns with cool running water. Anyone who received a significant shock should be checked by a doctor.
