Field Effect Transistors
Voltage-controlled transistors (JFET and MOSFET) — the building block of every modern chip.
In a FET the gate voltage controls a conducting channel between source and drain. The gate draws essentially no DC current, which makes FETs ideal for low-power digital logic and for power switching.
Families: JFET (junction gate) and MOSFET (insulated gate) — the MOSFET dominates, with billions inside every processor.
Sub-topics (4)
MOSFET
A metal-oxide-semiconductor FET: enhancement-mode N- and P-channel devices, threshold voltage and on-resistance.
MOSFET as a Switch
Use a logic-level MOSFET to switch motors, LEDs and heaters from a microcontroller.
JFET
Junction FETs are normally-on devices turned off by reverse-biasing the gate junction.
CMOS Technology
Complementary MOS pairs an N- and P-channel transistor so logic gates draw almost no static power.
