Magnetic Field and Flux

Field strength H, flux density B and flux Φ, and the permeability linking them.

B=μH=μ0μrHΦ=BAB = \mu H = \mu_0 \mu_r H \qquad \Phi = B A

  • HH — magnetic field strength (A/m), set by the current.
  • BB — flux density (tesla, T).
  • Φ\Phi — flux (weber, Wb).
  • μ0=4π×10−7\mu_0 = 4\pi \times 10^{-7} H/m; μr\mu_r is the relative permeability (air ≈ 1, silicon steel thousands).

Field around a long straight wire: B=μ0I2πrB = \dfrac{\mu_0 I}{2\pi r}. Inside a long solenoid: B=μ0nIB = \mu_0 n I.
