F(s)=∫0∞f(t) e−st dtF(s) = \int_0^{\infty} f(t)\, e^{-st}\, dt

Derivatives become multiplication by ss (with initial conditions), so circuits can be analysed with impedances RR, sLsL and 1/(sC)1/(sC).

f(t)f(t)F(s)F(s)
δ(t)\delta(t)1
u(t)u(t)1/s1/s
e−ate^{-at}1/(s+a)1/(s+a)
sin⁡ωt\sin\omega tω/(s2+ω2)\omega/(s^2+\omega^2)
cos⁡ωt\cos\omega ts/(s2+ω2)s/(s^2+\omega^2)

A transfer function H(s)=Y(s)/X(s)H(s) = Y(s)/X(s) has poles (roots of the denominator) and zeros. A system is stable if all poles lie in the left half of the s-plane. Setting s=jωs = j\omega gives the frequency response.
