Multiplexers and Demultiplexers

A MUX selects one of many inputs to a single output; a DEMUX routes one input to one of many outputs.

A 4-to-1 MUX uses 2 select lines:

Y=S1ˉS0ˉI0+S1ˉS0I1+S1S0ˉI2+S1S0I3Y = \bar{S_1}\bar{S_0}I_0 + \bar{S_1}S_0I_1 + S_1\bar{S_0}I_2 + S_1S_0I_3

A 2n2^n-to-1 MUX can implement any nn-variable function. Uses: sharing a single ADC between many sensors (CD4051 analog mux), data selectors inside CPUs, and expanding microcontroller pins.
