An IC packs transistors, resistors and capacitors onto one die. Scales range from a few gates (74HC00) to tens of billions of transistors in processors.

Packages: through-hole DIP, surface-mount SOIC, SOT-23, QFP, QFN and BGA. Pin 1 is marked by a dot or notch. Always read the datasheet: absolute maximum ratings, recommended operating conditions, electrical characteristics and the application circuit.
