Classification of Signals

Continuous vs discrete, periodic vs aperiodic, energy vs power, even vs odd signals.

  • Continuous-time x(t)x(t) vs discrete-time x[n]x[n].
  • Analog (any amplitude) vs digital (quantised amplitude).
  • Periodic: x(t)=x(t+T)x(t) = x(t + T); fundamental frequency f0=1/Tf_0 = 1/T.
  • Even x(−t)=x(t)x(-t) = x(t) and odd x(−t)=−x(t)x(-t) = -x(t); any signal is a sum of both.
  • Energy signals (finite energy, e.g. a pulse) vs power signals (finite average power, e.g. a sine wave).

Important standard signals: unit step u(t)u(t), unit impulse δ(t)\delta(t), ramp, exponential and sinusoid.
