How power is distributed inside a home — distribution boards, circuits, cables and protection.

Typical single-phase home layout: service connection → energy meter → main switch / isolator → distribution board (DB) containing an RCCB and MCBs for each circuit.

Common circuits:

  • Lighting — 1.5 mm² copper, 6–10 A MCB (B curve).
  • Power sockets (6/16 A) — 2.5 mm² copper with a 16–20 A MCB (4 mm² for long runs or heavy loads).
  • Heavy appliances (AC, geyser) — dedicated circuits.

Colour coding in India (IS/IEC): phase red/yellow/blue (single-phase often red or brown), neutral black (or blue), earth green or green-yellow. Switches must always break the phase, never the neutral.
